PERSONAL JOURNEY
LiveWell: Can you share your cancer diagnosis story and how it has impacted your life?
Chris: I was diagnosed in July 2020 after a mammogram, ultrasound, MRI, and biopsy. When I received the call from the doctor that I had invasive lobular breast cancer, amazingly enough, I didn't cry. I decided then to do everything my medical team told me I needed. I started chemotherapy in August 2020 and completed eight rounds in December 2020. Unfortunately, the chemo did not shrink my tumor as we had hoped. If it had shrunk, I could have had a lumpectomy, but instead, I underwent a double mastectomy in January 2021 and 15 rounds of radiation in March 2021. I then waited until November 2021 for my reconstruction surgery. After 3 days in ICU, I went home to rehab. I have had two additional reconstructive surgeries, one ankle surgery and one trigger finger surgery.
LiveWell: What were some of your biggest challenges during your treatment?
Chris: Chemotherapy is not for the weak. It took everything in me not to quit, and after five rounds of eight total, I was ready to give up. After discussing it with my oncologist, she agreed to lower my doses and convinced me to finish the treatments. This all happened during the pandemic, and the hospital was trying to shorten patients' time, so I did dense dose treatments every two weeks. I ended up with neuropathy in my fingers and toes and still have some issues today. When they tell you to use ice on your hands and feet during chemo...DO IT!!!
LiveWell: How did you find the strength to endure tough times?
Chris: I was only 61 when I was diagnosed. I have three wonderful grandchildren, and I didn't want to die at such a young age.
SUPPORT SYSTEM
LiveWell: Who were the key people who supported you during your journey, and how did they help?
Chris: My husband was my champion. He bragged to everyone about how well I did, even when I felt awful. Everyone in the hospital knew him because he talked and joked with everyone. My coworkers were very kind. I received cards and flowers at random times to make me smile.
LiveWell: How did the Complete Cancer Rehab community affect your recovery?
Chris: Erin and CCR didn't come into play until March 2021. When I couldn't lift my arms above my head, my oncologist finally referred me to Erin. Erin has been the greatest asset to my recovery and gave me the final kick I needed to recover fully. I have been working with Eric on strengthening my body since April 2023. Everyone at CCR is warm, friendly, compassionate, knowledgeable, and always willing to help. They are my forever friends.
COPING STRATEGIES
LiveWell: What coping mechanisms or strategies did you find most helpful?
Chris: I kept a journal of what happened, how I felt, what I ate, and what medications I took. To some extent, I still do this even today.
LiveWell: Were there any specific books, movies, or activities that gave you comfort and inspiration?
Chris: Nothing specific, but I learned all about streaming TV and binge-watched many shows that I had been too busy to watch.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
LiveWell: How has your perspective on health and wellness changed since your diagnosis?
Chris: I don't hesitate to talk to people about my journey and answer any questions they may have. I have gifted a journal to my niece and helped her not to be afraid of the doctor's office.
We hope Christine's story inspires you as much as it has inspired us. Her journey reminds us of the incredible strength and resilience within us all. Thank you for being part of our LiveWell community.

Truly an inspirational story! Chris, I am so glad you fought one more round (as Eric would say) through this journey! You are a remarkable person!
