Honoring the Healing Power of OT in Cancer Rehab and Lymphedema Care

April is Occupational Therapy Month—a time to recognize and celebrate the vital role occupational therapists play in helping individuals navigate life’s challenges and reclaim their independence. For those affected by cancer and lymphedema, occupational therapy is more than rehabilitation—it's a lifeline to recovery, self-confidence, and quality of life.
OT in CANCER REHAB; RESTORING STRENGH & PURPOSE

A cancer diagnosis can affect every aspect of daily life. From fatigue and pain to mobility changes and emotional strain, the journey through treatment and recovery is complex. Occupational therapists specializing in oncology rehab are trained to address these unique challenges with compassion and expertise.
They help individuals:
Rebuild strength and stamina after chemo, radiation, or surgery
Manage cancer-related fatigue and brain fog (“chemo brain”)
Adapt routines to reduce stress and conserve energy
Return to meaningful daily activities—whether it’s going back to work, cooking, gardening, or simply playing with grandkids
Cancer doesn’t define a person—and OT helps ensure that life after (or during) cancer is still full of purpose, activity, and joy.
LYMPHEDEMA MANAGEMENT: SUPPORTING FUNCTION & COMFORT

Lymphedema, a common side effect of cancer treatment—especially breast, pelvic, and head and neck cancers—can cause swelling, discomfort, and limited mobility. Certified lymphedema therapists (CLTs) within the OT profession offer specialized care that goes beyond physical relief—they teach skills that empower people to manage the condition long term.
Occupational therapy for lymphedema may include:
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) and compression bandaging
Skin care education to prevent infection
Fitting for compression garments
Functional training to improve mobility and daily task performance
Emotional support and coping strategies
By combining clinical expertise with a whole-person approach, OTs help individuals with lymphedema stay active, independent, and confident.
OT MONTH IS A TIME TO CELEBRAT HOPE, HEALING & FUNCTION
During Occupational Therapy Month, we honor the resilience of cancer survivors and the dedication of OTs who guide them through some of the most vulnerable and challenging times in life.
Here’s how you can join the celebration:
Thank an OT: If an OT has helped you or someone you love during cancer treatment, share your gratitude—your words mean the world.
Raise Awareness: Talk about the role of OT in cancer care. Many people don’t realize how impactful this therapy can be.
Support Survivors: Reach out to someone going through cancer treatment or recovery. Ask how you can support their journey.
A MESSAGE TO OUR THERAPIST

To the occupational therapists working in oncology and lymphedema care: THANK YOU! You help people find strength when they feel weak, offer solutions when the path is unclear, and provide hope when it's needed most. Your work matters deeply, and this month, we celebrate you.
