Lymphedema Tips for the Sweet Old Summertime

Summer is here, and after a long year of routines and responsibilities, many of us are ready to hit the road, board a plane, or relax by the beach. But if you’re living with lymphedema, traveling can bring a few extra challenges. With a little preparation and the right strategies, you can enjoy a safe, comfortable, and adventurous summer.

Here are some essential tips for traveling safely with lymphedema:

1. PLAN AHEAD

The key to a stress-free trip starts before you even leave home. If you’re flying, check airline policies about carrying medical supplies. If you’re driving, map out stops so you can stretch and move around. Pack a lymphedema emergency kit that includes compression garments, bandages, skincare supplies, medications, and a note from your doctor if needed.

2. WEAR YOUR COMPRESSION GARMENTS

Whether you're flying, driving, or cruising, wear your prescribed compression garments during travel. Air pressure changes, long periods of sitting, and heat can all increase swelling risk. Make sure your garments fit properly — consider getting a fresh fitting if it’s been a while.

3. STAY HYDRATED

It might seem counterintuitive, but drinking plenty of water actually helps manage lymphedema. Dehydration can make swelling worse. Carry a reusable water bottle with you, and aim for consistent sips throughout the day.

4. MOVE FREQUENTLY

When traveling, especially on long flights or car rides, it’s important to move regularly. Stand up, stretch, and walk around at least every 1-2 hours. Simple ankle pumps and gentle arm movements while seated can also help promote circulation.

5. PROTECT YOUR SKIN

Hot, sunny weather can make skin more vulnerable to injury, burns, and infection — all of which are serious concerns for those with lymphedema. Apply sunscreen generously, wear protective clothing, and be mindful of bug bites or scratches. Keep your skin moisturized, and clean any cuts or scrapes immediately.

6. PACK SMART

Choose lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that won’t constrict your affected area. Breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking materials can help you stay comfortable in the heat. Bring duplicates of key supplies in case of loss or damage during your travels.

7. WATCH FOR WARNING SIGNS

Know your body. If you notice increased swelling, heaviness, tightness, or changes in skin color, act quickly. Rest, elevate the affected area, use your compression garments, and if symptoms persist, seek medical attention.

8. SCHEDULE SOME REST TIME

Vacations are for fun, but they can also be physically taxing. Balance sightseeing and activities with time to relax and elevate your limb. Don’t feel guilty about putting your health first — you’ll enjoy your trip more when you feel your best.

9. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR CARE TEAM

Before traveling, check in with your lymphedema therapist or healthcare provider. They can give you personalized advice based on your destination, mode of travel, and individual needs. They might also provide you with a travel letter explaining your condition and treatments, which can be helpful at security checkpoints.

CONCLUSION

Traveling with lymphedema might require extra steps, but it should never stop you from exploring, connecting, and creating new memories. With a little extra planning, your summer adventures can be safe, empowering, and full of joy!

Wishing you safe travels and a happy, healthy summer!
